4 Must-Have Accessories for Spring Semester

By Amanda Cohen on January 28, 2018

Spring semester is underway and it’s time to update to our spring semester wardrobe (for me, this means wearing a parka and accessorizing it with snow boots, a scarf, and a hat). Since many of us have to wear long jackets, our spring semester wardrobe is mostly focused on accessories, rather than larger clothing items. The tricky thing about accessories is finding out what the right number of accessories is the golden number and what accessories are imperative to purchase and maybe even splurge on. Well, when difficulty strikes that’s where I come in. I am here to tell you what accessories to buy, and how many of each to buy.

Beanies

I love beanies (especially when I’m having a particularly bad hair day). Not only are they fashionable and cute, but they are also useful and serve a purpose: to keep your head and ears warm. Because beanies are so useful and because there are so many different variations of this #1 accessory, I recommend that everyone have at least 3-5 beanies at their disposal. First, you need to get a simple beanie with no frills, pompoms, or anything fancy. I recommend getting this beanie in either white or beige. Your second beanie should be a beanie with a big fur ball at that top of the head; these beanies have recently swept the nation. They are stylish and can be dressed up or dressed down. Have some fun with this beanie and try a color like olive or burgundy. Your third beanie should be a hipster beanie: oversized and knitted. These beanies are great for days that aren’t freezing and are perfect to hide greasy hair (we’ve all been there, trust me). Here are some great websites to find beanies and hats:

  • Free People
  • Revolve
  • Sakes Fifth Avenue
  • Bloomingdales
  • Nordstrom
  • Nordstrom Rack
  • Neiman Marcus

Scarves

Similarly, scarves serve as both a fashion statement and as a way to make sure that you stay warm in the winter and early days of spring. I would say that everyone should have three scarves at their disposal. First, you need a bulky, warm scarf that can be worn on really windy and snowy days. These scarves should be plush and act like one of the pillow neck rings that you buy when you are flying on a plane. Your next scarf should be a lighter scarf that still keeps you somewhat warm. I recommend an infinity scarf for this because you can make these as tight and as loose as you want depending on if you are looking for more warmth or more style. These two scarfs should be ones that you can wear with just about anything; you are more than welcome to get creative with patterns, but try to stick with more neutral colors so that you don’t have to buy too many scarves, because it can get expensive. Your last scarf should be a scarf that solely makes a fashion statement. For this, try to have some fun with it and find cool colors and patterns. Maybe even consider buying a scarf that has an interesting finishing along each of the two ends of the scarf. Here are some great websites to find scarves for any and all occasions:

  • Revolve
  • North Face
  • Rag & Bone
  • Nordstrom
  • Nordstrom Rack
  • Free People
  • Urban Outfitters

Bracelets

Recently, bracelet stacking has been the epitome of high fashion. I have certain bracelets that I never take off and stacking is a great way to help dress up your outfit or dress it down. I prefer to wear more bracelets during the day and less at night because I think wearing two nice bracelets at night as opposed to 3-5 not as nice bracelets during the day is more elegant. I never used to be a jewelry person, but bracelets are so fun to stack and creating different stacking patterns and looks is a great way to utilize your creative side. I personally like using gold as a base-metal, but other girls prefer silver and white gold. However, don’t be afraid to mix different colors, styles, and metals; just because your favorite bracelet is silver does not mean that every one of your bracelets should be silver. If you are going for a more bohemian look, be sure to incorporate some color (Free People and Planet Blue show great examples of bohemian-styled bracelet stacking). Here are some great websites to find bracelets to stack for days:

  • Bloomingdales
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Nordstrom Rack
  • Alex & Ani
  • Vita Fede
  • Urban Outfitters

Necklaces

I may be biased, but I think that women should have one necklace that is special to them that they never want to take off; I say that I might be bias because I’ve worn the same necklace since I was a junior in high school and I never take it off… it almost becomes a trademark of my style and appearance. Even though I sometimes like to wear two necklaces at a time, I think that one necklace would suffice for any young woman’s jewelry box. I like simple necklaces that have a chain and then one pendant in the middle. Some popular pendant ideas are evil eyes, hamsas, flowers, butterflies, circles (some people like to have their birthstone in it), and hearts. Since I think it’s only necessary to really have one good necklace in your jewelry box, I recommend splurging a little bit (or saving up for a nicer one when you get older). Here are some great websites to help you expand your jewelry collection:

  • Bloomingdales
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Nordstrom Rack
  • Alex & Ani
  • Vita Fede
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
